ASTM F1554-Klasse 55 Ankerbolzen: Grad 36 vs 55 vs 105
ASTM F1554 Grad 55 is a 55 ksi minimum-yield anchor-bolt grade for anchoring structural supports to concrete. It sits between Grade 36 and Grade 105 in strength. Choose the grade from the structural design—not simply by selecting the highest number—and state S1 when a Grade 55 anchor must meet the supplementary weldability requirement.
ASTM F1554 covers straight or bent, headed or headless anchor bolts and anchor rods, including threaded rod used for anchorage. The purchase order should also define geometry, Threads, Beschichtung, nuts and washers, Testen, marking and the required standard edition.
F1554 Grade 36 vs 55 vs 105
| Grad | Minimum yield strength | Tensile strength | Diameter range | Selection note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 36 | 36 ksi | 58–80 ksi | 1/4–4 in. | Lower-strength grade; normally weldable, subject to the approved procedure and project requirements. |
| 55 | 55 ksi | 75–95 ksi | 1/4–4 in. | Intermediate strength. Specify Supplementary Requirement S1 when weldability must be controlled. |
| 105 | 105 ksi | 125–150 ksi | 1/4–3 in. | High-strength grade. Welding is not recommended; confirm design and fabrication constraints. |
These are standard minimum/range values summarized by AISC for F1554 anchor rods. They are not heat-specific test results. Actual chemical and mechanical results must come from the supplied material test certificate.
Is Grade 55 stronger than Grade 36?
Yes in specified minimum yield strength: 55 ksi versus 36 ksi. That does not make Grade 55 an automatic substitute. The engineer must evaluate tensile demand, Duktilität, embedment, concrete behavior, connection detailing, welding, diameter and governing code.
Grad 55 oder Note 105?
Grad 105 provides a higher minimum yield strength, but it has a smaller maximum diameter in the specification and is not the preferred choice when field welding is expected. Grad 55 can offer a useful balance of strength and fabrication flexibility when S1 is specified where required.
What Does S1 Mean for F1554 Grade 55?
S1 is a supplementary requirement; it is not automatic for every Grade 55 order. Der ASTM F1554 scope lists a weldable-steel supplementary requirement for Grade 55. AISC guidance explains that S1 controls chemistry through a carbon-equivalent formula so Grade 55 can be ordered for welding applications.
Do not describe Grade 55 as “weldable” unless the order and documentation identify S1. Grad 105 should not be treated as a weldable anchor grade. Even with S1, welding must follow the approved engineering procedure and applicable code.
Kann ASTM F1554 Anchor Bolts Be Galvanized?
Ja, F1554 anchor bolts can be ordered with a zinc coating when the project specifies it. Galvanizing is a coating requirement, not a default property of the grade. The order should identify the coating specification and whether nuts and washers are supplied as a matched assembly.
- State the required coating specification and coating method.
- Coordinate nut dimensions and thread allowance with the coating thickness.
- Confirm compatible nuts and washers rather than ordering them independently by nominal diameter alone.
- Request coating documentation and inspection requirements in the RFQ.
AISC’s anchor-rod FAQ notes that F1554 was developed as an umbrella specification that includes galvanized applications.
Is There an Equivalent Material for F1554 Grade 55?
There is no universal one-to-one equivalent that can replace a certified F1554 Grade 55 anchor bolt by name alone. Material such as ASTM A572 Grad 55 may be used as a rough strength analogy, but product form, Chemie, Wärmebehandlung, mechanische Tests, thread requirements, marking and certification still have to satisfy the ordered F1554 requirements.
What is the difference between F1554 and A36?
ASTM F1554 is an anchor-bolt product specification with defined grades, configurations and acceptance requirements. ASTM A36 is a structural carbon-steel material specification. A piece of A36 stock is therefore not automatically an ASTM F1554 Grad 36 anchor bolt, and it is not an equivalent to F1554 Grade 55.
What Buyers Should Put in an RFQ
- Standard and grade: ASTM F1554 Grad 55 and the required edition.
- Konfiguration: straight, bent, headed, headless or fully threaded rod; include a drawing for nonstandard geometry.
- Abmessungen: nominal diameter, Gesamtlänge, threaded length, hook or head dimensions, and projection where applicable.
- Themen: UNC/UNF or specified series, pitch, thread class and any oversize-nut requirement for coated threads.
- Weldability: state S1 explicitly when required; do not rely on a verbal “weldable” description.
- Beenden: plain or specified zinc coating, including the coating standard.
- Assembly: nut and washer specifications, quantities and preassembly requirement.
- Acceptance evidence: MTC, heat/lot traceability, Maßprüfung, coating records, marking and project-specific tests.
Standard Requirements, Typical Values and Actual Results
- Standard requirements are the limits and tests in the ordered F1554 edition and supplementary requirements.
- Typical values may help early design discussion but are not guaranteed acceptance data.
- Actual results are heat- or lot-specific values shown on the material certificate and test reports.
A quotation should not promise exact chemistry or mechanical results before the applicable heat or lot has been tested.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
Was ist ASTM F1554 Grad 55?
It is the intermediate-strength grade in ASTM F1554, with a specified minimum yield strength of 55 ksi, for anchor bolts and anchor rods used to connect structural supports to concrete.
What is the ASTM standard for anchor bolts?
ASTM F1554 is the principal ASTM specification for carbon, boron, alloy and high-strength low-alloy anchor bolts designed for anchoring structural supports to concrete. Other anchor types, such as mechanical expansion anchors, are outside its scope.
Does every Grade 55 anchor bolt meet S1?
NEIN. S1 must be specified as a supplementary requirement when the controlled weldable chemistry is needed.
Is F1554 Grade 55 galvanized by default?
NEIN. Galvanizing must be stated in the purchase requirements together with the coating standard and compatible nut/thread provisions.
