A182 F5
5Cr–0.5Mo alloy steel family
A chromium-molybdenum forging grade evaluated for selected refinery and high-temperature pressure-system duties.
A182 F9
9Cr–1Mo alloy steel family
A 9Cr-1Mo forging grade used in selected high-temperature applications and legacy piping specifications.
A182 F11
1.25Cr–0.5Mo alloy steel family
An established chromium-molybdenum forging family for elevated-temperature pressure service.
A182 F22
2.25Cr–1Mo alloy steel family
A widely specified 2.25Cr-1Mo forging grade for elevated-temperature and pressure-system applications.
A182 F91
9Cr–1Mo–V–Nb creep-strength-enhanced steel
A creep-strength-enhanced ferritic forging grade for demanding high-temperature service, with properties highly dependent on controlled heat treatment.
F5 and F9 use higher chromium levels; F11 and F22 are established chromium-molybdenum grades; F91 is a creep-strength-enhanced 9Cr material requiring especially disciplined heat treatment and welding control. The piping class and design code must name the permitted grade.

The same commercial alloy name can map to different forging, fitting, and casting designations. State the complete material and product-form specification.
| Grade | Selection cue | Typical project context | Procurement control |
|---|---|---|---|
| A182 F5 | Chromium alloy service | Refining, petrochemical equipment, and process piping where the project class permits F5. | Specify grade, class where applicable, heat treatment, hardness, dimensional standard, and welding controls. |
| A182 F9 | Higher-chromium service | Power, refining, and thermal-process systems where F9 is explicitly listed by the design basis. | Confirm code listing, allowable stress, heat treatment, hardness, and compatibility with adjoining pipe and weld metal. |
| A182 F11 | Established Cr-Mo route | Power generation, petrochemical, boiler, and high-temperature process piping. | State the required F11 class, heat treatment, impact or hardness requirements, and project welding specification. |
| A182 F22 | High-temperature pressure | Refinery units, hydrogen service reviews, power systems, and thermal-process equipment. | Define the F22 class, heat treatment, hardness limits, NDE, and any hydrogen-service project requirements. |
| A182 F91 | Creep-strength enhanced | Modern high-temperature power and process systems designed specifically around Grade 91 materials. | Require traceable heat treatment, hardness mapping as specified, qualified welding and PWHT procedures, and strict material control. |

What is Alloy Steel?
ASTM A182 alloy-steel grades use different chromium-molybdenum systems to support high-temperature pressure service. Their suitability depends on allowable stress, oxidation and corrosion conditions, welding procedure, heat treatment, wall thickness, and long-term operating regime.
How do I choose between the listed Alloy Steel grades?
F5 and F9 use higher chromium levels; F11 and F22 are established chromium-molybdenum grades; F91 is a creep-strength-enhanced 9Cr material requiring especially disciplined heat treatment and welding control. The piping class and design code must name the permitted grade.
Can the same alloy designation be used for flanges, fittings, and valves?
The same alloy family can be used across a pressure system, but the ASTM grade designation can change with product form and manufacturing route. Confirm the forging, wrought-fitting, or casting specification together with the dimensional standard and pressure rating.
What should a Alloy Steel RFQ include?
Include component type, exact grade and UNS where applicable, ASTM product specification, size, schedule or bore, pressure class, facing or end connection, quantity, service conditions, heat treatment, testing, certification, marking, and inspection requirements.
Does the material standard also define flange, fitting, or valve dimensions?
Usually not. The purchase specification normally combines a material standard with a dimensional or pressure-rating standard such as ASME B16.5, B16.9, B16.11, B16.34, an EN or DIN standard, or a project-specific specification.
