What is a 904L stainless steel pipe end cap?
A 904L stainless steel pipe end cap is a wrought butt-welding fitting used to terminate a pipe or header permanently. The rounded closed end, straight skirt and BE preparation provide a compact welded closure without a gasketed joint.
UNS N08904 is a high-nickel, الموليبدينوم- and copper-alloyed austenitic stainless steel. It is commonly selected where 316L does not provide sufficient resistance to reducing acids or localized corrosion. 904L caps require verified raw material, controlled forming, solution heat treatment and appropriate cleaning. PMI is recommended because visual appearance cannot distinguish 904L reliably from common stainless grades.

ASTM A403/A403M WP904L is the wrought pressure-fitting grade for UNS N08904. CR904L may be specified for fittings made to an applicable MSS SP-43 dimensional basis.
What is the EN equivalent of 904L?
The commonly referenced European designation is EN 1.4539, X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5. The purchase order should state the governing material standard rather than treating designations as automatically interchangeable.
Why choose 904L instead of 316L?
904L contains more nickel and molybdenum plus copper, improving performance in selected reducing acids and localized-corrosion environments. A service-specific corrosion review is still required.
Are Sch 160 and XXS caps always available?
Availability depends on NPS, exact wall, heat-treatment route and quantity. Heavy-wall requirements should be confirmed from matching pipe dimensions before quotation.
Which inspection documents can be supplied?
