ASTM A182 F51 vs F60 Flanges: S31803 vs S32205 Explained
Quick answer: under ASTM A182/A182M, F51 is associated with UNS S31803 y F60 with UNS S32205. Both belong to the Duplex 2205 family, but the grade names are not automatically interchangeable. S32205 uses tighter chemistry controls within the broader S31803 composition range. An F60 heat may be eligible for dual certification to F51 only when the actual material, tratamiento térmico, mechanical results and every ordered requirement satisfy both grades and the certificate identifies both. A flange marked or certified only as F51 must not be assumed to meet F60.
For flange buyers, the important question is not whether one trade name sounds newer or stronger. The purchasing decision must connect the exact ASTM grade to the flange standard, tamaño, clase de presión, frente a, aburrir, service conditions and inspection documents. This guide explains the difference and shows how to review a material test certificate before accepting a substitution or dual-certified flange.
F51 vs F60 Flanges at a Glance
| Comparison point | ASTM A182 F51 | ASTM A182 F60 |
|---|---|---|
| UNS designation | S31803 | S32205 |
| Material family | Original Duplex 2205 composition range | Tighter-composition Duplex 2205 grade developed within the S31803 range |
| Procurement meaning | Order F51 when the project requires S31803 forgings | Order F60 when the project requires S32205 forgings |
| Dual certification | Possible only when one heat demonstrably complies with every requirement of both ordered grades. The MTC and product marking must support the claim. | |
| Automatic substitution? | No. Engineering and purchasing approval may still be required even when a heat is technically dual-certifiable. | |
Why S32205 and F60 Were Introduced
UNS S31803 established the original 22% chromium Duplex 2205 composition envelope. In practice, material produced near the lower end of that envelope could have less consistent localized-corrosion resistance than material made toward its better-alloyed end. S32205 was introduced with tighter minimum controls for key alloying elements so buyers could specify the optimized part of the 2205 range more directly.
This relationship explains why correctly produced S32205 material can often satisfy the S31803 chemistry range, while the reverse is not automatically true. It does not mean that the words “2205,” “S31803,” “S32205,” “F51” and “F60” can be swapped freely on purchase orders. The exact product specification and grade still govern acceptance.
Buyer caution: use the chemical and mechanical limits in the project-adopted edition of ASTM A182/A182M. A supplier’s typical-data sheet helps explain the alloy, but it is not a replacement for the ordered specification or the heat-specific MTC.
ASTM A182 Controls Material; ASME B16.5 Controls Flange Requirements
ASTM A182/A182M covers forged or rolled alloy and stainless steel piping components, including pipe flanges, accesorios forjados, valves and related parts. It supplies the material-grade framework for F51 and F60, including chemistry, heat treatment and mechanical-property requirements.
ASME B16.5 addresses pipe flanges and flanged fittings through pressure-temperature ratings, materiales, dimensiones, tolerancias, marking and testing for its covered size and class range. ASME B16.47 may apply to larger-diameter flanges. The dimensional standard does not replace the material specification, and the material grade does not by itself define dimensions or pressure class.
A usable order therefore combines both parts. Por ejemplo: ASTM A182 F60 weld-neck flange, ASME B16.5, NPS and Class, frente a, bore or matching pipe schedule, and the required inspection documentation. Review the ASTM A182 F60 Dúplex 2205 flange product route or the corresponding ASTM A182 F51 Dúplex 2205 weld-neck flange before preparing the RFQ.
Can F60 Be Dual-Certified to F51?
Potentially, but dual certification is an evidence question—not a nickname. The purchaser should verify all of the following:
- The adopted specifications and editions: both grades must be evaluated against the requirements that actually govern the order.
- Heat-specific chemistry: the reported heat analysis must fall within the permitted limits for both grades.
- Tratamiento térmico: the recorded treatment and cooling route must comply with the applicable requirements for the delivered forging.
- Mechanical results: tensile, yield, elongation and hardness results must satisfy the ordered grade requirements.
- Supplementary requirements: impact, corrosion, ferrite, NDE or other project tests must be satisfied where they form part of the purchase order.
- Traceability: flange marking, heat number, MTC and inspection records must identify the same material and support both grade designations.
Even when these conditions are met, the project may prohibit substitution without written approval. Conversely, an F51 certificate that lists only S31803 does not establish compliance with F60/S32205. Do not infer the missing grade from the general term “Duplex 2205.”
How to Check an F51 or F60 Material Test Certificate
| MTC field | What to confirm | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Specification and grade | ASTM A182/A182M and F51, F60 or both, as ordered | Accepting “2205” without the complete grade |
| número UNS | S31803 for F51; S32205 for F60 | Treating the two UNS numbers as identical labels |
| Heat number | Matches the flange marking and traceability records | Reviewing chemistry from a different heat or generic data sheet |
| Química | Every controlled element complies with the ordered grade or both grades for dual certification | Checking only chromium, nickel and molybdenum |
| Tratamiento térmico | Recorded condition and cooling comply with the specification | Assuming PMI proves heat treatment or duplex phase balance |
| Test results | Mechanical and ordered supplementary tests are traceable and acceptable | Assuming optional corrosion or impact tests were performed |
Which Grade Should a Buyer Specify?
Use the exact grade named by the piping material specification or approved project documentation. If the project calls for F60/S32205, quote that grade. If it calls for F51/S31803, quote F51 unless a dual-certified or alternative proposal is explicitly permitted. Avoid presenting F60 as a universal upgrade: grade choice also affects approved material lists, welding documents, corrosion reviews, pressure-temperature tables and project traceability.
For a broader map of pipe, tube, fitting and forged-flange specifications, see the existing Dúplex 2205 ASTM standards guide. The present article is narrower: it addresses the F51/F60 choice for forged flanges and the evidence required to accept dual certification.

For differential-pressure measurement service, the material decision must be combined with the tapping and bore requirements of the instrument design. El ASTM A182 F60 Dúplex 2205 orifice flange route is available for that separate product configuration.
Preguntas frecuentes
Es ASTM A182 F51 the same as UNS S31803?
Within the ASTM A182 forged-product route, F51 is the grade designation associated with UNS S31803. State both the material specification and grade because the UNS number alone does not define the flange dimensions, pressure class or all manufacturing requirements.
Es ASTM A182 F60 the same as UNS S32205?
Within ASTM A182, F60 is associated with UNS S32205. The order should still identify the required specification edition and all applicable dimensional, inspection and certification requirements.
Can an F60 flange be supplied for an F51 order?
Only when the heat meets the ordered F51 requirements, the documents and marking support the claimed certification, and the substitution or dual certification is permitted by the purchaser. Do not assume approval from chemistry alone.
Can an F51 flange be treated as F60?
No. F51/S31803 does not automatically meet the tighter S32205/F60 chemistry requirements. The delivered heat must be evaluated against F60, and the certificate must establish compliance.
Is F60 always better than F51?
No universal ranking applies. F60 gives the purchaser tighter alloy controls, but suitability depends on the governing specification, service environment, flange design, ruta de fabricación, testing and project approval.
Do F51 and F60 flanges use the same dimensions?
They can share the same dimensional standard, tamaño, type and class, but material grade remains a separate requirement. Confirm the applicable pressure-temperature rating for the exact material and standard edition rather than transferring a rating by appearance.
