Description

High-alloy austenitic stainless steel industrial valve

904L Stainless Steel Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

A high-alloy stainless valve material for acid processing, fertilizer and corrosive chemical systems. The triple offset butterfly valve configuration is engineered for compact high-temperature or severe-service process isolation.

What is a 904L Stainless Steel Triple Offset Butterfly Valve?

A 904L Stainless Steel Triple Offset Butterfly Valve combines a high-nickel, molybdenum- and copper-alloyed austenitic stainless steel developed for improved resistance in sulfuric-acid and chloride-bearing environments with a quarter-turn metal-seated design using three geometric offsets to reduce seat rubbing and support severe-service isolation.

904L is selected using concentration-temperature corrosion data and considering chlorides, oxidizers, reducing conditions and crevice geometry. Seat-stack design, pressure direction, leakage class, shaft loading, thermal cycling and actuator torque are configuration-specific.

904L Stainless Steel material selection

Selection point Engineering guidance
Material profile a high-nickel, molybdenum- and copper-alloyed austenitic stainless steel developed for improved resistance in sulfuric-acid and chloride-bearing environments
Why it is selected Improved resistance over 316L in many sulfuric-acid and localized-corrosion environments while retaining austenitic fabrication behavior.
Typical service Sulfuric and phosphoric acid, fertilizer, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical and pollution-control systems.
Limitations to check It does not replace nickel alloys in every severe acid or chloride environment. Hot concentrated chlorides and hydrochloric acid need specialist review.
Specification route Wrought ASTM A182 F904L; cast ASTM A351 CN3MN where applicable; exact component specification stated on order
Verification PMI for nickel, molybdenum and copper, MTC/heat traceability and confirmation of solution-treated condition and low carbon.
Important: Specify UNS N08904 and the applicable F904L or CN3MN component grade rather than relying only on the 904L market name. Body, bonnet/cover, trim, stem/shaft, seats, packing, bolting and gaskets must be specified as one compatible system.

Triple Offset Butterfly Valve design and standards

API 609

Common design basis for butterfly valves; category, body pattern, seat design and edition must be identified.

ASME B16.34

Pressure-temperature and general valve design requirements where applicable.

API 598 / EN 12266-1

Shell and seat testing selected for the applicable project and market.

API 607 / ISO 10497

Fire-safe qualification applies only to the exact seat, seal and valve configuration.

Seal ring, seat stack, pressure direction, shaft/packing system, bearing loads and actuator safety factor must be reviewed as a complete package.

Fire-safe, fugitive-emission, sour-service, oxygen, cryogenic, chlorine and PED requirements apply only when explicitly defined and supported for the exact offered configuration.

Typical applications

Industry Material service context Valve selection focus
Acid processing Selected sulfuric and phosphoric acid process systems Pressure direction, leakage class, metal-seat design, temperature, torque and fire-safe/emissions qualification
Fertilizer Corrosive acid and chemical handling lines Pressure direction, leakage class, metal-seat design, temperature, torque and fire-safe/emissions qualification
Pulp and paper Bleaching and corrosive process systems Pressure direction, leakage class, metal-seat design, temperature, torque and fire-safe/emissions qualification
Pharmaceutical and pollution control Clean corrosive process and wet-scrubber systems Pressure direction, leakage class, metal-seat design, temperature, torque and fire-safe/emissions qualification

Application examples are not a corrosion or design approval. The end user must verify process chemistry, contaminants, pressure, temperature, velocity, cycling, emissions and regulatory requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cast grade commonly associated with 904L valves?

ASTM A351 CN3MN is a commonly specified cast high-alloy austenitic grade associated with 904L-type service. Forged components may use ASTM A182 F904L.

How does 904L compare with 316L?

904L has higher nickel and molybdenum plus copper, providing improved resistance in many sulfuric-acid and localized-corrosion conditions, but at higher material and fabrication cost.

Can 904L be used in hydrochloric acid?

It is not a general solution for hydrochloric acid. Concentration, temperature, aeration and contaminants must be evaluated; higher nickel-molybdenum alloys may be required.

What are the three offsets?

They separate the shaft from the seat and body centerlines and add a conical sealing geometry, allowing rapid seat disengagement during opening.

Is every triple offset butterfly valve bidirectional?

No. Some designs have a preferred pressure direction or different leakage capability by direction. Confirm the tested performance of the exact configuration.

Can 904L Stainless Steel be used for every component in this triple offset butterfly valve?

Not automatically. Pressure-boundary, trim, stem or shaft, seating, packing, gasket and bolting materials have different mechanical and corrosion duties. The complete bill of materials must be engineered for the service.
