Description

High-alloy austenitic stainless steel industrial valve

904L Stainless Steel Globe Valve

A high-alloy stainless valve material for acid processing, fertilizer and corrosive chemical systems. The globe valve configuration is engineered for frequent isolation and regulated process flow.

What is a 904L Stainless Steel Globe Valve?

A 904L Stainless Steel Globe Valve combines a high-nickel, molybdenum- and copper-alloyed austenitic stainless steel developed for improved resistance in sulfuric-acid and chloride-bearing environments with a linear-motion design in which a disc or plug moves perpendicular to the seat for isolation or controlled throttling.

904L is selected using concentration-temperature corrosion data and considering chlorides, oxidizers, reducing conditions and crevice geometry. Pressure drop, cavitation, noise, velocity, plug contour, flow direction and actuator sizing must be checked for throttling service.

Material identityUNS N08904; EN 1.4539
Primary advantageImproved resistance over 316L in many sulfuric-acid and localized-corrosion environments while retaining austenitic fabrication behavior.
Valve functionControlled disc travel for isolation and engineered throttling duty.
Procurement basisMaterial, design, pressure test and documentation stated on one purchase specification.

904L Stainless Steel material selection

Selection point Engineering guidance
Material profile a high-nickel, molybdenum- and copper-alloyed austenitic stainless steel developed for improved resistance in sulfuric-acid and chloride-bearing environments
Why it is selected Improved resistance over 316L in many sulfuric-acid and localized-corrosion environments while retaining austenitic fabrication behavior.
Typical service Sulfuric and phosphoric acid, fertilizer, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical and pollution-control systems.
Limitations to check It does not replace nickel alloys in every severe acid or chloride environment. Hot concentrated chlorides and hydrochloric acid need specialist review.
Specification route Wrought ASTM A182 F904L; cast ASTM A351 CN3MN where applicable; exact component specification stated on order
Verification PMI for nickel, molybdenum and copper, MTC/heat traceability and confirmation of solution-treated condition and low carbon.
Important: Specify UNS N08904 and the applicable F904L or CN3MN component grade rather than relying only on the 904L market name. Body, bonnet/cover, trim, stem/shaft, seats, packing, bolting and gaskets must be specified as one compatible system.

Globe Valve design and standards

API 623

Common design basis for steel globe valves with flanged or butt-welding ends.

ASME B16.34

Pressure-temperature, material and general valve requirements within scope.

API 598

Shell, backseat and closure pressure testing when specified.

IEC 60534

Relevant when the product is engineered as a control valve with defined sizing and performance requirements.

Body pattern, plug contour, seat/hardfacing, flow direction, packing, pressure drop and actuator thrust must reflect the actual regulating or isolation duty.

Fire-safe, fugitive-emission, sour-service, oxygen, cryogenic, chlorine and PED requirements apply only when explicitly defined and supported for the exact offered configuration.

Typical applications

Industry Material service context Valve selection focus
Acid processing Selected sulfuric and phosphoric acid process systems Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust
Fertilizer Corrosive acid and chemical handling lines Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust
Pulp and paper Bleaching and corrosive process systems Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust
Pharmaceutical and pollution control Clean corrosive process and wet-scrubber systems Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust

Application examples are not a corrosion or design approval. The end user must verify process chemistry, contaminants, pressure, temperature, velocity, cycling, emissions and regulatory requirements.

Quality, testing and traceability

Material traceability

Frequently asked questions

What is the cast grade commonly associated with 904L valves?

ASTM A351 CN3MN is a commonly specified cast high-alloy austenitic grade associated with 904L-type service. Forged components may use ASTM A182 F904L.

How does 904L compare with 316L?

904L has higher nickel and molybdenum plus copper, providing improved resistance in many sulfuric-acid and localized-corrosion conditions, but at higher material and fabrication cost.

Can 904L be used in hydrochloric acid?

It is not a general solution for hydrochloric acid. Concentration, temperature, aeration and contaminants must be evaluated; higher nickel-molybdenum alloys may be required.

Can a globe valve be used for throttling?

Yes, but the plug contour, pressure drop, cavitation, noise, velocity and actuator requirements must be engineered for the actual process.

How does a globe valve differ from a gate valve?

A globe valve provides better regulation but higher pressure drop. A gate valve offers a straighter flow path and is mainly used for full-open/full-closed isolation.

Can 904L Stainless Steel be used for every component in this globe valve?

Not automatically. Pressure-boundary, trim, stem or shaft, seating, packing, gasket and bolting materials have different mechanical and corrosion duties. The complete bill of materials must be engineered for the service.
