Description
Chromium-molybdenum-vanadium high-temperature bolting
ASTM A193 B16 High Temperature Stud Bolts
ASTM A193 Grade B16 fully threaded alloy-steel stud bolts for project-specified high-temperature pressure joints, supplied with matching heavy hex nuts and documentation as ordered.
Quick answer
ASTM A193 Grade B16 is a heat-treated chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy-steel bolting grade intended for high-temperature or high-pressure applications. It is selected by the governing design and material specification and should not be treated as a direct substitute for Grade B7.
Product at a glance
What are ASTM A193 B16 stud bolts?
ASTM A193 B16 stud bolts are manufactured from chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy steel and heat treated to the ordered standard. The grade is used where the piping class, pressure-equipment specification or engineering design requires B16 bolting for elevated-temperature strength.
The material grade does not establish the finished stud dimensions or matching nut automatically. A complete order states the ASTM edition, diameter, length, thread series, nut grade, finish, quantity, test requirements and applicable project documents.
ASTM A193 B16 stud bolt specifications
| Material | Chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy steel |
|---|---|
| Heat treatment | Heat treated to ASTM A193/A193M Grade B16 requirements |
| Configuration | Fully threaded flange stud; double-end configuration by drawing |
| Threads | UNC, 8UN or project-specified series and class to ASME B1.1 |
| Dimensions | ASME B18.31.2, flange bolting schedule or approved drawing |
| Matching nuts | ASTM A194/A194M grade selected by the project; Grade 7 is commonly considered where compatible |
| Finish options | Plain, black or approved high-temperature coating system |
| Documentation | MTC, heat treatment, mechanical tests, hardness and dimensions as ordered |
Final dimensions, tolerances, heat treatment, mechanical properties, impact or hardness requirements, coating and acceptance criteria follow the purchase order and the contractually specified standard edition.
Why specify this grade?
Specify B16 when it appears in the approved piping material class, equipment datasheet or engineering calculation. Its Cr-Mo-V composition and heat treatment distinguish it from common B7 bolting and support demanding elevated-temperature applications.
Critical engineering note
There is no single universal maximum service temperature for a B16 stud bolt product page. Allowable stress, creep behaviour, oxidation, nut material, coating, preload retention and the governing code must all be reviewed at the actual design conditions.

Quality, inspection and documentation
B16 supply can include heat-treatment records, mechanical-property verification, hardness results and full heat-number traceability. Inspection requirements should be stated before material processing begins.
- EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate when ordered
- Heat-number and manufacturing-batch traceability
- Chemical composition and mechanical-property results
- Hardness testing at the frequency required by the ordered grade
- Charpy impact testing for low-temperature grades as specified
- Dimensional inspection and calibrated thread gauging
- Coating thickness or surface-condition inspection when applicable
- Third-party inspection, marking and export packing by agreement

Frequently asked questions
What material is ASTM A193 B16?
B16 is a heat-treated chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy-steel bolting grade covered by ASTM A193/A193M.
Is B16 the same as B7?
No. They are different ASTM A193 grades with different chemistry and grade requirements. Substitution requires design and purchaser approval.
What nuts should be supplied with B16 studs?
The project must state the ASTM A194 nut grade. Grade 7 is commonly considered for compatible applications, but temperature, strength and code requirements control the final choice.
Can B16 stud bolts be coated?
Yes when the coating and application process are approved for the design temperature, tightening method and corrosion environment. High-temperature suitability must be documented.

Reference standards
Material requirements are controlled by ASTM A193/A193M. Matching heavy hex nut requirements are specified separately under ASTM A194/A194M when applicable. Thread form and stud dimensions may reference ASME B1.1 and ASME B18.31.2, subject to the purchase order. Always state the required edition instead of assuming the latest edition applies to an existing project.
