Monel 400 Threaded Rod

Monel 400 UNS N04400 nickel-copper alloy threaded rod for marine, saltwater, brine and selected chemical-process fastening applications.

Description

Nickel-copper marine and process alloy

Monel 400 Threaded Rod

Nickel-copper threaded bar for seawater equipment, marine hardware and selected hydrofluoric-acid, alkali and reducing chemical environments.

Product overview

Monel 400 threaded rod is manufactured from UNS N04400 solid-solution nickel-copper alloy. It combines useful mechanical properties with resistance in many seawater, brine, caustic and reducing-media applications.

ASTM B164 is commonly specified for nickel-copper alloy rod, bar and wire. Finished threaded rods should identify the material condition, thread system, dimensions, surface cleanliness and complete mating hardware.

Marine serviceEstablished use in seawater and saltwater handling equipment.
Nickel-copper stabilityStrong resistance in selected reducing and alkali media.
Fabricable alloyMachinable into custom all-thread and fastening components.
Long service potentialLifecycle value in compatible corrosive environments.

Monel 400 threaded rod specifications

Material designation Alloy 400 / UNS N04400 / EN 2.4360
Starting material ASTM B164 rod and bar, ordered condition
Thread systems ASME B1.1 UNC, UNF or 8UN; ASME B1.13M / ISO metric
Size range 1/4–3 in and M6–M72 typical; custom diameters by review
Length Standard stock length or project cut-to-length
Surface Clean machined or project-specified finish
Matching hardware Monel 400 or compatible engineered nut and washer materials
Inspection EN 10204 3.1, PMI, dimensions and thread gauging

Final dimensions, tolerances, heat treatment, coating, testing and acceptance criteria follow the confirmed purchase order and the applicable standard edition. Availability depends on diameter, length, thread form and production quantity.

Why specify this material?

Monel 400 is considered for marine systems and selected reducing chemical environments where conventional stainless steels may not provide the required resistance. It is not appropriate for every oxidizing acid or high-velocity seawater condition.

Engineering note

Nickel-copper alloys can create galvanic effects when coupled to less noble metals. Evaluate the complete assembly, electrical continuity, area ratio and cathodic protection. Use compatible lubricants and controlled thread fit to reduce galling.

Typical applications

Marine equipmentPumps, shafts, heat exchangers and deck hardware
Salt and brine systemsEvaporators, crystallizers and brine handling
Chemical processingSelected HF, alkali and reducing-media equipment
Water treatmentCorrosion-resistant fasteners for compatible process systems

Quality, inspection and documentation

Monel 400 threaded rod should remain segregated from carbon-steel contamination and be verified by PMI. Mating-material selection, thread finish and anti-galling controls are important parts of final inspection.

  • EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate
  • Heat-number and batch traceability
  • Chemical composition and mechanical properties
  • Dimensional inspection and thread gauging
  • PMI for stainless and nickel alloys when ordered
  • Coating thickness or surface inspection when applicable
  • Third-party inspection and additional testing by agreement
  • Export marking and seaworthy packing

Frequently asked questions

Which material standard is used for Monel 400 threaded rod?

ASTM B164 is commonly specified for UNS N04400 rod, bar and wire. Add the required thread and finished-product inspection criteria.

Is Monel 400 suitable for seawater?

It performs well in many seawater applications, especially flowing and aerated conditions, but velocity, deposits, crevices and galvanic coupling must be evaluated.

Can Monel 400 be used in hydrofluoric acid?

It is considered for many HF conditions, but aeration, oxidizing contaminants, concentration and temperature can materially affect corrosion. Confirm with service-specific data.

Are matching Monel nuts available?

Yes. Matching Monel 400 nuts and washers, or engineer-approved compatible materials, can be supplied with thread inspection and PMI.
