Description
Nickel-copper alloy industrial valve
Monel 400 Globe Valve
A nickel-copper valve material for marine, alkali, salt and selected hydrofluoric-acid service. The globe valve configuration is engineered for frequent isolation and regulated process flow.
What is a Monel 400 Globe Valve?
A Monel 400 Globe Valve combines a nickel-copper alloy known for resistance in many seawater, hydrofluoric-acid and reducing environments together with useful mechanical properties with a linear-motion design in which a disc or plug moves perpendicular to the seat for isolation or controlled throttling.
Monel 400 performance depends on aeration, velocity, deposits, galvanic contact and process contaminants. Pressure drop, cavitation, noise, velocity, plug contour, flow direction and actuator sizing must be checked for throttling service.

| Documentation | EN 10204 3.1 material records, pressure test report, GA drawing and project inspection records as ordered |
This is an engineered inquiry product, not a universal stock specification. Final availability depends on valve size, pressure class, material form, trim, seat system, operator, quantity and required code edition.
Monel 400 material selection
| Selection point | Engineering guidance |
|---|---|
| Material profile | a nickel-copper alloy known for resistance in many seawater, hydrofluoric-acid and reducing environments together with useful mechanical properties |
| Why it is selected | Good resistance in flowing seawater, many alkalis and selected reducing media, with established marine-service experience. |
| Typical service | Marine systems, salt production, caustic alkali, hydrofluoric acid under controlled conditions and chemical processing. |
| Limitations to check | Stagnant or polluted seawater, strongly oxidizing acids and galvanic coupling can cause problems. Erosion-corrosion velocity limits must be checked. |
| Specification route | Wrought/forged ASTM B564 UNS N04400 as applicable; cast ASTM A494 M35 grades selected separately |
| Verification | PMI for nickel-copper chemistry, heat traceability and separate review of wrought N04400 versus cast M35 component grades. |
Globe Valve design and standards
API 623
Common design basis for steel globe valves with flanged or butt-welding ends.
ASME B16.34
Pressure-temperature, material and general valve requirements within scope.
API 598
Shell, backseat and closure pressure testing when specified.
IEC 60534
Relevant when the product is engineered as a control valve with defined sizing and performance requirements.
Body pattern, plug contour, seat/hardfacing, flow direction, packing, pressure drop and actuator thrust must reflect the actual regulating or isolation duty.
Fire-safe, fugitive-emission, sour-service, oxygen, cryogenic, chlorine and PED requirements apply only when explicitly defined and supported for the exact offered configuration.
Typical applications
| Industry | Material service context | Valve selection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Marine engineering | Seawater, brine and shipboard utility systems within velocity limits | Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust |
| Chemical processing | Selected hydrofluoric-acid and reducing chemical duties | Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust |
| Alkali production | Caustic and salt-processing systems | Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust |
| Oil and gas | Selected sour, brine and offshore instrument/process duties after review | Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust |
Application examples are not a corrosion or design approval. The end user must verify process chemistry, contaminants, pressure, temperature, velocity, cycling, emissions and regulatory requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Is Monel 400 suitable for seawater?
It has extensive seawater use, especially in flowing and clean conditions, but stagnant water, deposits, sulfides, galvanic couples and excessive velocity can change performance.
What is the difference between N04400 and cast M35 material?
N04400 identifies wrought Monel 400, while ASTM A494 M35 grades are cast nickel-copper alloys. They are related service materials but not the same product specification.
Can Monel 400 be used with hydrofluoric acid?
It can perform well in selected hydrofluoric-acid conditions, but aeration, oxidizing contaminants, concentration and temperature must be evaluated by the process materials engineer.
Can a globe valve be used for throttling?
Yes, but the plug contour, pressure drop, cavitation, noise, velocity and actuator requirements must be engineered for the actual process.
How does a globe valve differ from a gate valve?
A globe valve provides better regulation but higher pressure drop. A gate valve offers a straighter flow path and is mainly used for full-open/full-closed isolation.
Can Monel 400 be used for every component in this globe valve?
Not automatically. Pressure-boundary, trim, stem or shaft, seating, packing, gasket and bolting materials have different mechanical and corrosion duties. The complete bill of materials must be engineered for the service.
