Description
Cr-Mo-V elevated-temperature bolting
ASTM A193 B16 Alloy Steel Threaded Rod
Heat-treated chromium-molybdenum-vanadium threaded bar for power generation, petrochemical equipment and bolted assemblies exposed to elevated temperature.
Product overview
ASTM A193 Grade B16 is an alloy-steel bolting grade containing chromium, molybdenum and vanadium. It is selected for high-temperature or high-pressure applications where its elevated-temperature strength characteristics are required by the design.
B16 threaded rod can be supplied as continuous all-thread or cut to project lengths. Because temperature, relaxation, coatings and mating hardware affect joint performance, the complete bolting assembly should be specified rather than selecting the rod grade in isolation.
ASTM A193 B16 threaded rod specifications
| Bolting standard | ASTM A193/A193M, ordered edition |
|---|---|
| Grade / material | Grade B16 chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy steel |
| Heat treatment | Quenched and tempered to the ordered grade requirements |
| Thread systems | ASME B1.1 UNC, UNF or 8UN; metric threads to project specification |
| Size range | 1/4–4 in and M6–M100 typical manufacturing range |
| Compatible nuts | ASTM A194 Grade 4 or 7 may be specified; design confirmation required |
| Surface | Plain, black or project-qualified high-temperature coating |
| Documentation | EN 10204 3.1 MTC, heat treatment, mechanical tests and dimensions as ordered |
Final dimensions, tolerances, heat treatment, coating, testing and acceptance criteria follow the confirmed purchase order and the applicable standard edition. Availability depends on diameter, length, thread form and production quantity.
Why specify this material?
B16 is chosen when the joint design needs a recognized high-temperature Cr-Mo-V bolting grade. Maximum service temperature and allowable stress must come from the governing design code, not from a generic product-page temperature claim.
Engineering note
Verify the selected nut grade, differential thermal expansion, preload retention, relaxation and coating temperature limit. Hot-service fasteners require an installation and maintenance strategy appropriate to the equipment code.
Typical applications
Quality, inspection and documentation
B16 supply should preserve heat and heat-treatment lot identity through threading and cutting. Mechanical testing, hardness, dimensions, thread gauging and final marking should match the ordered edition and inspection plan.
- EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate
- Heat-number and batch traceability
- Chemical composition and mechanical properties
- Dimensional inspection and thread gauging
- PMI for stainless and nickel alloys when ordered
- Coating thickness or surface inspection when applicable
- Third-party inspection and additional testing by agreement
- Export marking and seaworthy packing

Frequently asked questions
What is ASTM A193 Grade B16?
B16 is a quenched-and-tempered chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy-steel bolting grade intended for high-temperature, high-pressure and special-purpose applications.
Is B16 interchangeable with B7?
No. They have different chemistry, mechanical-property ranges and temperature behavior. Substitution requires approval from the responsible design engineer.
Which nuts are used with B16?
ASTM A194 Grade 4 or Grade 7 nuts may be specified depending on the design and standard edition. The complete assembly must be confirmed on the purchase order.
Can B16 threaded rod receive a coating?
A project-qualified coating can be considered, but its cure and service temperature, friction characteristics and effect on installation preload must be evaluated.
