Description
Factory-made butt-welding pipe fitting
ASTM A403 WP304L Stainless Steel Pipe End Cap
An economical low-carbon stainless steel butt-weld closure for hygienic, utility and general corrosion-resistant piping systems.
What is an ASTM A403 WP304L pipe end cap?
An ASTM A403 WP304L pipe end cap is a factory-made wrought stainless steel fitting that closes the end of a butt-welded piping run. It has a contoured closed end, a cylindrical skirt and a weld preparation matched to the ordered pipe wall.
WP304L is the low-carbon version of 304 stainless steel and is widely specified for welded clean-service and general process equipment. It is a practical choice when broad corrosion resistance is required but the service does not justify the molybdenum-bearing WP316L grade.
WP304L pipe end cap specifications
| Product type | Stainless steel butt weld pipe end cap / BW cap |
|---|---|
| Material specification | ASTM A403 WP304L |
| Material designation | UNS S30403; commonly cross-referenced with EN 1.4307 / X2CrNi18-9 |
| Dimensional standard | ASME B16.9; MSS SP-43 option where applicable |
| Nominal size | NPS 1/2–48 / DN15–DN1200, subject to wall and manufacturing route |
| Wall thickness | Sch 5S, 10S, 40S, 80S, 160, XXS and project-specific wall |
| Construction | Seamless or welded as applicable and ordered |
| End preparation | Butt-weld bevel matched to pipe wall and project specification |
| Surface | Pickled/passivated, solution-annealed finish or specified treatment |
| Documentation | EN 10204 3.1 MTC, heat traceability, dimensional report and PMI when ordered |
Dimensions and tolerances follow the ordered standard and edition. Final pressure-temperature suitability is determined by the piping design code, material, wall thickness, matching pipe and service conditions.
ASME and European project requirements
North American projects
Specify ASTM A403 WP304L, ASME B16.9, NPS, pipe schedule, construction and weld-end preparation. State any supplementary testing or cleanliness requirement.
European projects
Specify the required EN grade such as 1.4307, DN, wall thickness, dimensional standard and inspection-document type. Project and regulatory requirements must be listed explicitly.
WP304L vs WP316L pipe end cap
| Selection point | WP304L | WP316L |
|---|---|---|
| UNS designation | S30403 | S31603 |
| Alloy difference | 18Cr-8Ni family without intentional molybdenum addition | Molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel |
| Best value | General clean and mildly corrosive service | More demanding chloride-bearing or chemical service |
| Design caution | Verify chloride exposure and cleaning chemistry | Still requires a service-specific corrosion review |
Typical applications
| Industry | Typical service | Selection reason |
|---|---|---|
| Food and beverage | Product transfer, clean utilities and equipment branches | Cleanable surface and familiar stainless material family |
| Pharmaceutical | Purified utility support and non-critical process lines | Low-carbon welded construction and documentation options |
| Water systems | Treated water, air and plant utility closures | Good general corrosion resistance |
| Manufacturing | Skids, vessels, pumps and general process piping | Balanced cost, fabrication and durability |
Application examples are guidance only. The project engineer must confirm material compatibility, corrosion allowance, impact requirements and design-code compliance.
Manufacturing, inspection and documentation
Production can include forming, solution heat treatment, calibration, bevel machining, pickling/passivation and dimensional inspection. Cleanliness, surface finish and packaging should be defined when the application is hygienic.
Heat-number control and MTC review against the purchase specification.
Outside diameter, overall length, wall thickness, ovality and bevel geometry checked as ordered.
PT, MT, UT, RT, hardness or third-party inspection can be arranged when specified.
EN 10204 3.1 certificate and inspection records supplied according to the purchase order.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between WP304 and WP304L?
WP304L has a lower maximum carbon content, which is commonly preferred for welded fabrication. The ordered ASTM A403 grade must be stated on the purchase specification.
Is WP304L suitable for chloride service?
Its suitability depends on chloride level, temperature, flow and crevice conditions. WP316L, duplex or super duplex may be more appropriate when localized corrosion risk is higher.
Are seamless and welded caps available?
Both construction routes may be available depending on size, wall and quantity. State a mandatory construction route in the RFQ if the project specification requires one.
How is the bevel selected?
The end preparation is matched to the ordered pipe wall and welding procedure. Provide the pipe schedule or exact wall thickness and any project bevel detail.
Which inspection documents are available?
EN 10204 3.1 MTC, dimensional inspection and heat traceability are commonly requested. PMI and additional NDE can be arranged when ordered.
