Description
Duplex stainless steel industrial valve
Duplex 2205 Globe Valve
A high-strength chloride-resistant valve material for offshore, chemical, pulp and water applications. The globe valve configuration is engineered for frequent isolation and regulated process flow.
What is a Duplex 2205 Globe Valve?
A Duplex 2205 Globe Valve combines a ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel combining higher strength with improved chloride stress-corrosion and localized-corrosion resistance compared with common austenitic grades with a linear-motion design in which a disc or plug moves perpendicular to the seat for isolation or controlled throttling.
Duplex performance depends on balanced microstructure, correct solution heat treatment, controlled welding and component-specific material specifications. Pressure drop, cavitation, noise, velocity, plug contour, flow direction and actuator sizing must be checked for throttling service.

Duplex 2205 material selection
| Selection point | Engineering guidance |
|---|---|
| Material profile | a ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel combining higher strength with improved chloride stress-corrosion and localized-corrosion resistance compared with common austenitic grades |
| Why it is selected | Higher strength than 300-series stainless steels with useful pitting, crevice and chloride stress-corrosion resistance. |
| Typical service | Offshore production, produced water, pulp and paper, chemical processing and chloride-bearing water systems. |
| Limitations to check | Temperature limits, hydrogen-related damage, improper heat treatment and intermetallic phases must be considered. 2205 is not interchangeable with super duplex 2507. |
| Specification route | Wrought ASTM A182 F60/F51; cast ASTM A995/A890 4A where applicable; heat treatment and corrosion testing defined by order |
| Verification | PMI, MTC, heat treatment records and specified ferrite, ASTM A923 or corrosion testing according to the project material specification. |
Globe Valve design and standards
API 623
Common design basis for steel globe valves with flanged or butt-welding ends.
ASME B16.34
Pressure-temperature, material and general valve requirements within scope.
API 598
Shell, backseat and closure pressure testing when specified.
IEC 60534
Relevant when the product is engineered as a control valve with defined sizing and performance requirements.
Body pattern, plug contour, seat/hardfacing, flow direction, packing, pressure drop and actuator thrust must reflect the actual regulating or isolation duty.
Fire-safe, fugitive-emission, sour-service, oxygen, cryogenic, chlorine and PED requirements apply only when explicitly defined and supported for the exact offered configuration.
Typical applications
| Industry | Material service context | Valve selection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Offshore oil and gas | Produced water, utility and selected process systems | Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust |
| Pulp and paper | Digesters, bleaching support and chloride-bearing process lines | Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust |
| Chemical processing | Organic acids, chlorides and mixed process streams after review | Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust |
| Water and desalination | Feed, pretreatment and moderate seawater-related systems | Pressure drop, plug/seat trim, cavitation, flow direction, leakage and operating thrust |
Application examples are not a corrosion or design approval. The end user must verify process chemistry, contaminants, pressure, temperature, velocity, cycling, emissions and regulatory requirements.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between S31803 and S32205?
S32205 has tighter minimum alloying requirements that improve consistency of corrosion performance. Both are used for 2205 products, but the exact UNS grade must be stated.
Why is heat treatment important for duplex valves?
Correct solution heat treatment helps establish the required ferrite-austenite balance and dissolve harmful phases. Improper thermal history can reduce toughness and corrosion resistance.
Which tests are commonly requested for duplex material?
Projects may require PMI, ferrite measurement, ASTM A923 testing, corrosion testing, impact testing and NDE. Requirements depend on product form, service and project specification.
Can a globe valve be used for throttling?
Yes, but the plug contour, pressure drop, cavitation, noise, velocity and actuator requirements must be engineered for the actual process.
How does a globe valve differ from a gate valve?
A globe valve provides better regulation but higher pressure drop. A gate valve offers a straighter flow path and is mainly used for full-open/full-closed isolation.
Can Duplex 2205 be used for every component in this globe valve?
Not automatically. Pressure-boundary, trim, stem or shaft, seating, packing, gasket and bolting materials have different mechanical and corrosion duties. The complete bill of materials must be engineered for the service.
