Description

Duplex stainless steel industrial valve

Duplex 2205 Wedge Gate Valve

A high-strength chloride-resistant valve material for offshore, chemical, pulp and water applications. The wedge gate valve configuration is engineered for fully open or fully closed isolation with low open-position pressure loss.

What is a Duplex 2205 Wedge Gate Valve?

A Duplex 2205 Wedge Gate Valve combines a ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel combining higher strength with improved chloride stress-corrosion and localized-corrosion resistance compared with common austenitic grades with a full-opening linear isolation design that raises a wedge out of a substantially straight flow path.

Duplex performance depends on balanced microstructure, correct solution heat treatment, controlled welding and component-specific material specifications. A wedge gate valve is not normally used for throttling because partial opening can produce vibration and seat or guide damage.

Primary advantageHigher strength than 300-series stainless steels with useful pitting, crevice and chloride stress-corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 material selection

Selection point Engineering guidance
Material profile a ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel combining higher strength with improved chloride stress-corrosion and localized-corrosion resistance compared with common austenitic grades
Why it is selected Higher strength than 300-series stainless steels with useful pitting, crevice and chloride stress-corrosion resistance.
Typical service Offshore production, produced water, pulp and paper, chemical processing and chloride-bearing water systems.
Limitations to check Temperature limits, hydrogen-related damage, improper heat treatment and intermetallic phases must be considered. 2205 is not interchangeable with super duplex 2507.
Specification route Wrought ASTM A182 F60/F51; cast ASTM A995/A890 4A where applicable; heat treatment and corrosion testing defined by order
Verification PMI, MTC, heat treatment records and specified ferrite, ASTM A923 or corrosion testing according to the project material specification.
Important: State S32205 or S31803 and the exact wrought/cast grade; the general word duplex is not sufficient. Body, bonnet/cover, trim, stem/shaft, seats, packing, bolting and gaskets must be specified as one compatible system.

Wedge Gate Valve design and standards

API 600

Common design basis for bolted-bonnet steel gate valves, including material, trim, testing and marking requirements.

ASME B16.34

General pressure-temperature and valve design requirements within scope.

API 598

Shell, backseat and closure pressure testing when specified.

API 624 / ISO 15848-1

Fugitive-emission qualification is specific to the packing system and qualified valve design.

Wedge flexibility, seat hardfacing, stem/packing system, body cavity drainage, thermal binding risk and operating thrust require service-specific review.

Fire-safe, fugitive-emission, sour-service, oxygen, cryogenic, chlorine and PED requirements apply only when explicitly defined and supported for the exact offered configuration.

Typical applications

Industry Material service context Valve selection focus
Offshore oil and gas Produced water, utility and selected process systems Full-open isolation, wedge/seat materials, thermal effects, packing emissions and operator thrust
Pulp and paper Digesters, bleaching support and chloride-bearing process lines Full-open isolation, wedge/seat materials, thermal effects, packing emissions and operator thrust
Chemical processing Organic acids, chlorides and mixed process streams after review Full-open isolation, wedge/seat materials, thermal effects, packing emissions and operator thrust
Water and desalination Feed, pretreatment and moderate seawater-related systems Full-open isolation, wedge/seat materials, thermal effects, packing emissions and operator thrust

Application examples are not a corrosion or design approval. The end user must verify process chemistry, contaminants, pressure, temperature, velocity, cycling, emissions and regulatory requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between S31803 and S32205?

S32205 has tighter minimum alloying requirements that improve consistency of corrosion performance. Both are used for 2205 products, but the exact UNS grade must be stated.

Why is heat treatment important for duplex valves?

Correct solution heat treatment helps establish the required ferrite-austenite balance and dissolve harmful phases. Improper thermal history can reduce toughness and corrosion resistance.

Which tests are commonly requested for duplex material?

Projects may require PMI, ferrite measurement, ASTM A923 testing, corrosion testing, impact testing and NDE. Requirements depend on product form, service and project specification.

Can a wedge gate valve be used for throttling?

Normally no. It is intended for fully open or fully closed service; extended partial opening can damage the wedge, seats and guides.

What is the difference between flexible and solid wedges?

A flexible wedge can accommodate limited alignment and thermal effects, while a solid wedge is more rigid. Selection follows the design and service conditions.

Can Duplex 2205 be used for every component in this wedge gate valve?

Not automatically. Pressure-boundary, trim, stem or shaft, seating, packing, gasket and bolting materials have different mechanical and corrosion duties. The complete bill of materials must be engineered for the service.
