Duplex 2205 Threaded Rod

Duplex 2205 UNS S31803/S32205 stainless steel threaded rod combining high strength and chloride resistance for marine, chemical and water-treatment service.

Description

Ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel

Duplex 2205 Threaded Rod

High-strength duplex stainless all-thread for marine, chemical, water-treatment and chloride-bearing industrial assemblies.

Product overview

Duplex 2205 threaded rod is produced from UNS S31803 or the more tightly controlled UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel. Its mixed ferritic-austenitic microstructure provides higher strength than common austenitic stainless grades and useful resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking and localized corrosion.

ASTM A276 or ASTM A479 can be specified for duplex stainless bar depending on the application. The purchase order should identify the exact UNS grade, material standard, solution-treated condition, thread geometry, finished dimensions and inspection plan.

Higher strengthDuplex structure can reduce section size in engineered designs.
Chloride resistanceImproved stress-corrosion and pitting resistance over 304/316.
Industrial versatilityUsed in marine, process and water-treatment assemblies.
PMI and ferrite controlMaterial verification supports reliable duplex procurement.

Duplex 2205 threaded rod specifications

Material designation UNS S31803 or S32205 / EN 1.4462
Starting material ASTM A276 or ASTM A479 bar, as specified
Condition Solution annealed, descaled and supplied to ordered properties
Thread systems ASME B1.1 UNC/UNF/8UN; ASME B1.13M / ISO metric
Size range 1/4–4 in and M6–M100 typical; exact properties depend on diameter
Surface Clean machined, pickled and passivated when specified
Matching hardware Duplex 2205 or engineer-approved compatible nuts and washers
Inspection EN 10204 3.1, PMI, dimensions, thread gauging and ferrite/corrosion tests as ordered

Final dimensions, tolerances, heat treatment, coating, testing and acceptance criteria follow the confirmed purchase order and the applicable standard edition. Availability depends on diameter, length, thread form and production quantity.

Why specify this material?

2205 is considered when 316L lacks the required strength or chloride resistance but super duplex or nickel alloy is not justified. Design must still check pitting temperature, crevices, weld proximity, galvanic couples and service temperature.

Engineering note

UNS S31803 and S32205 are related but not identical ordering designations. State one exact grade. Duplex phase balance and corrosion performance depend on chemistry and heat treatment; PMI alone cannot verify microstructure.

Quality, inspection and documentation

Duplex threaded rod requires exact UNS identification, solution-treatment traceability, PMI and clean fabrication. Ferrite measurement, ASTM A923 testing or project corrosion tests can be supplied when explicitly ordered.

  • EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate
  • Heat-number and batch traceability
  • Chemical composition and mechanical properties
  • Dimensional inspection and thread gauging
  • PMI for stainless and nickel alloys when ordered
  • Coating thickness or surface inspection when applicable
  • Third-party inspection and additional testing by agreement
  • Export marking and seaworthy packing

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between S31803 and S32205?

Both are commonly called 2205, but S32205 has tighter minimum alloying limits intended to support consistent corrosion performance. The order should state the exact UNS grade.

Which standards cover Duplex 2205 bar?

ASTM A276 is used for general stainless bars and ASTM A479 for bars used in pressure-related applications. Select the governing standard for the design.

Is 2205 suitable for seawater?

It can be used in selected seawater and brackish-water applications, but temperature, chlorination, crevices, deposits and flow conditions may require super duplex or nickel alloy.

How is duplex quality verified?

MTC and PMI verify chemistry, while ferrite measurement, microstructure examination and corrosion testing assess processing quality when required.
