Large-Diameter Alloy Steel Flanges Delivered for an Oil and Gas Project

Project NewsPublished: 3 August 2026SASA FLANGE Project Team
Project completed

SASA FLANGE delivered a large-diameter alloy steel flange package for an oil and gas project. The order included weld neck and blind configurations manufactured to the specified ASME B16.47 series, with drilling, facing, bore, NDE and packing controls documented before dispatch.

Project snapshot

Project status Delivered
Material ASTM A182 F11 and F22 alloy steel
Flange type Weld neck and blind
Standard ASME B16.47, project-specified Series A or Series B
Pressure class Class 150–600
Size range NPS 26–48
Inspection PMI, UT, hardness, dimensions and visual condition
Application Oil and gas transmission and processing facilities

Delivery highlights

Series designation was controlled because Series A and Series B are not dimensionally interchangeable.
Bolt-hole orientation and mating-equipment interfaces were checked against approved drawings.
Packing design accounted for higher component mass and exposed machined faces.

Controlling large-diameter flange interfaces

For NPS 26 and larger flanges, the order description identified ASME B16.47 and the required series. The series affects outside diameter, bolt circle, hole pattern and related dimensions, so it cannot be inferred after machining. Weld neck bores and end preparations were also checked against the connecting pipe wall and field welding plan.

Large components require staged dimensional inspection because small angular or drilling errors can become significant at the mating interface. Approved drawings and calibrated measurement tools were used as controlled references.

Handling, inspection and delivery controls

Material identity, hardness and UT requirements were reviewed with the heat and production records. Final inspection included sealing faces, bolt holes, flange thickness, hub profile, bore and marking. Lifting and handling points were planned to avoid using machined surfaces.

Rigid face covers, separation blocks and crate bracing prevented flange-to-flange contact during road, port and ocean handling. Package weights and lifting information were marked for the receiving team.

Information needed for a comparable RFQ

A comparable inquiry should identify the exact material specification and grade, governing standard and edition, NPS, pressure class, flange type, facing, bore or matching pipe schedule, quantity and destination. For this project-news scope, the key reference points were ASTM A182 F11 and F22 alloy steel, Weld neck and blind, Class 150–600 and NPS 26–48.

State the required EN 10204 certificate type, heat-number traceability, PMI extent, hardness limits, dimensional report, NDE method and acceptance standard, third-party witness points, packing method and required delivery date at quotation stage. Early definition allows manufacturing, inspection and document schedules to be reviewed together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main purchasing difference between ASME B16.5 and B16.47?

ASME B16.5 covers NPS 1/2 through 24, while B16.47 covers large-diameter NPS 26 through 60 and requires a Series A or Series B choice.

Can Series A and Series B flanges mate directly?

They use different dimensional systems and generally should not be assumed interchangeable. Confirm the exact mating interface.

Why is special packing needed for large flanges?

Their mass and exposed faces increase the risk of impact, distortion and handling damage during international logistics.
