Description
Super-austenitic stainless steel industrial valve
254 SMO Swing Check Valve
A high-alloy stainless valve material positioned between conventional 316 and nickel alloys for chloride service. The swing check valve configuration is engineered for backflow prevention in steady-flow process and utility lines.
What is a 254 SMO Swing Check Valve?
A 254 SMO Swing Check Valve combines a high-molybdenum nitrogen-alloyed super-austenitic stainless steel with strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing media with an automatic non-return design whose hinged disc opens with forward flow and closes as flow decelerates or reverses.
254 SMO is considered when 316 is insufficient and an austenitic high-alloy material is preferred, subject to strength and code requirements. Check valves should be sized from minimum, normal and maximum flow plus transient behavior rather than automatically matching the pipe size.

254 SMO material selection
| Selection point | Engineering guidance |
|---|---|
| Material profile | a high-molybdenum nitrogen-alloyed super-austenitic stainless steel with strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing media |
| Why it is selected | High localized-corrosion resistance with austenitic fabrication characteristics and no duplex phase-balance requirement. |
| Typical service | Seawater, pulp bleaching, flue-gas cleaning, chemical processing and high-chloride water systems. |
| Limitations to check | Warm concentrated chlorides, crevices, reducing acids and galvanic conditions still require evaluation. Fabrication must control heat input and cleanliness. |
| Specification route | Wrought ASTM A182 F44; cast ASTM A351 CK3MCuN where applicable; heat treatment and corrosion requirements defined by order |
| Verification | PMI for molybdenum and alloy content, MTC/heat traceability and specified corrosion, ferric-chloride or NDE testing. |
Swing Check Valve design and standards
API 594
Common design and testing basis for check valves within its scope.
ASME B16.34
Pressure-temperature, material and general valve design requirements within scope.
API 598
Shell and closure pressure-testing basis when specified.
API 6D
Pipeline-service requirements apply only to valves specifically designed and documented to API 6D.
Disc stability, minimum velocity, pressure drop, orientation, pump trip and system transients affect slam risk and service life.
Fire-safe, fugitive-emission, sour-service, oxygen, cryogenic, chlorine and PED requirements apply only when explicitly defined and supported for the exact offered configuration.
Typical applications
| Industry | Material service context | Valve selection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Desalination and seawater | Intake, pretreatment and high-chloride water systems | Minimum stable velocity, orientation, pressure drop, disc dynamics, closure leakage and transient control |
| Pulp and paper | Bleaching and chloride-bearing process equipment | Minimum stable velocity, orientation, pressure drop, disc dynamics, closure leakage and transient control |
| Pollution control | Wet scrubber and flue-gas-cleaning systems | Minimum stable velocity, orientation, pressure drop, disc dynamics, closure leakage and transient control |
| Chemical processing | Chloride and selected acid process streams | Minimum stable velocity, orientation, pressure drop, disc dynamics, closure leakage and transient control |
Application examples are not a corrosion or design approval. The end user must verify process chemistry, contaminants, pressure, temperature, velocity, cycling, emissions and regulatory requirements.

Frequently asked questions
What is the ASTM forged grade for 254 SMO?
ASTM A182 F44 is commonly specified for forged UNS S31254 pressure components. Cast bodies commonly use ASTM A351 CK3MCuN when applicable.
How does 254 SMO compare with duplex 2205?
254 SMO is super-austenitic and highly alloyed for localized-corrosion resistance; 2205 is duplex and generally has higher strength. Selection depends on corrosion, strength, fabrication and temperature.
Is 254 SMO suitable for seawater?
It is used in many seawater and high-chloride applications, but temperature, chlorination, crevices, deposits and flow conditions must still be checked.
What causes swing check valve slam?
Oversizing, low velocity, excessive disc travel and rapid flow reversal can cause impact closure. Correct hydraulic sizing and transient review are essential.
Can a swing check valve be installed vertically?
Only when approved for vertical upward flow and the operating velocity can open and stabilize the disc. Follow the qualified design and installation instructions.
Can 254 SMO be used for every component in this swing check valve?
Not automatically. Pressure-boundary, trim, stem or shaft, seating, packing, gasket and bolting materials have different mechanical and corrosion duties. The complete bill of materials must be engineered for the service.
