Description
Factory-made butt-welding pipe fitting
ASTM A403 WP316L Butt Weld Pipe Cap to ASME B16.9
A corrosion-resistant 316L stainless steel end closure with a weld bevel for high-integrity process, marine, pharmaceutical and water-treatment piping.
What is an ASTM A403 WP316L butt weld pipe cap?
An ASTM A403 WP316L pipe cap is a wrought austenitic stainless steel butt-welding fitting used to close the end of a pipe, header or branch permanently. Its contoured closed end and prepared weld bevel support a compact, leak-tight termination without a bolted joint.
WP316L combines low carbon content with molybdenum alloying. It is frequently selected where welded fabrication and localized corrosion resistance are more important than the lower initial cost of WP304L. Actual suitability must be checked against chloride level, temperature, cleaning chemicals and the project corrosion allowance.
WP316L pipe cap specifications
| Product type | Butt weld pipe cap / end cap / BW cap |
|---|---|
| Material specification | ASTM A403 WP316L |
| Material designation | UNS S31603; commonly cross-referenced with EN 1.4404 / X2CrNiMo17-12-2 |
| Dimensional standard | ASME B16.9; MSS SP-43 option where applicable |
| Nominal size | NPS 1/2–48 / DN15–DN1200, subject to material, wall and manufacturing route |
| Wall thickness | Sch 5S, 10S, 40S, 80S, 160, XXS and project-specific wall |
| Construction | Seamless or welded as applicable and ordered |
| End preparation | Butt-weld bevel to the ordered piping specification |
| Surface | Pickled/passivated, solution-annealed finish or project-specific treatment |
| Documentation | EN 10204 3.1 MTC, heat-number traceability, dimensional report and PMI when ordered |
Dimensions and tolerances follow the ordered standard and edition. Final pressure-temperature suitability is determined by the piping design code, material, wall thickness, matching pipe and service conditions.
ASME and European project requirements
North American projects
Specify ASTM A403 WP316L, ASME B16.9, NPS, matching pipe schedule, construction, bevel and supplementary examination. Include the pipe specification when an exact bore or special wall is required.
European projects
State the required EN material designation such as 1.4404, DN size, wall thickness, fitting dimensional standard, PED-related documentation if applicable and EN 10204 inspection certificate type.
WP316L vs WP304L pipe cap
| Selection point | WP316L | WP304L |
|---|---|---|
| UNS designation | S31603 | S30403 |
| Molybdenum | Typically alloyed with molybdenum | No intentional molybdenum addition |
| Relative corrosion behavior | Better localized corrosion resistance in many chloride services | Good general corrosion resistance for less aggressive service |
| Typical selection | Chemical, marine, water treatment and demanding hygienic service | Clean utilities, food processing and general industrial service |
Typical applications
| Industry | Typical service | Selection reason |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical processing | Process headers, drains and equipment branch closures | Corrosion resistance plus welded system integrity |
| Marine and water treatment | Seawater-adjacent and chloride-bearing utility lines | Improved pitting resistance versus 304L in many conditions |
| Pharmaceutical | Clean utilities and validated process support systems | Low-carbon weldability and traceable stainless construction |
| Food and beverage | Cleaning circuits and corrosive product lines | Cleanable stainless surface and durable closure |
Application examples are guidance only. The project engineer must confirm material compatibility, corrosion allowance, impact requirements and design-code compliance.
Manufacturing, inspection and documentation
The manufacturing route may include forming, solution heat treatment, weld processing where applicable, calibration, bevel machining, pickling/passivation and final inspection. PMI and surface-condition requirements should be stated at quotation stage.
Heat-number control and MTC review against the purchase specification.
Outside diameter, overall length, wall thickness, ovality and bevel geometry checked as ordered.
PT, MT, UT, RT, hardness or third-party inspection can be arranged when specified.

Frequently asked questions
What does WP316L mean?
WP316L identifies a wrought austenitic stainless steel fitting grade under ASTM A403. UNS S31603 is the corresponding alloy designation.
Does ASME B16.9 define the material?
No. ASME B16.9 primarily addresses dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing and marking for factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings. ASTM A403 defines the stainless steel material requirements.
Which schedules can be supplied?
Common requirements include Sch 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S, with heavier or project-specific walls available subject to size and manufacturing route.
Is WP316L always suitable for seawater?
No material should be selected from grade name alone. Temperature, chloride concentration, flow, crevices and cleaning chemistry must be reviewed; duplex or super duplex may be preferred for more severe service.
Can PMI and EN 10204 3.1 documents be supplied?
Yes, when included in the purchase order. Heat-number traceability, EN 10204 3.1 certification, PMI and dimensional inspection can be supplied to the agreed inspection plan.
