Description
Factory-made butt-welding pipe fitting
ASTM A815 S32205 Duplex 2205 Pipe End Cap
A high-strength duplex stainless steel butt-weld closure for offshore, desalination, chemical, marine and pulp-and-paper piping.
What is an ASTM A815 S32205 Duplex 2205 pipe cap?
An ASTM A815 S32205 pipe end cap is a wrought duplex stainless steel butt-welding fitting used to terminate a pipe or header. Its ferritic-austenitic microstructure gives Duplex 2205 a combination of strength and corrosion resistance that can outperform conventional austenitic stainless steels in suitable chloride-bearing services.
Correct solution heat treatment and controlled fabrication are essential to the intended duplex phase balance and corrosion performance. Purchase specifications should define the exact ASTM A815 grade designation, UNS number, heat treatment, testing and any project-specific ferrite or corrosion-test acceptance criteria.
S32205 Duplex 2205 cap specifications
| Product type | Duplex stainless steel butt weld pipe end cap |
|---|---|
| Material specification | ASTM A815, ordered grade designation with UNS S32205 |
| Material designation | UNS S32205 / Duplex 2205; commonly cross-referenced with EN 1.4462 |
| Dimensional standard | ASME B16.9 |
| Nominal size | NPS 1/2–48 / DN15–DN1200, subject to wall and manufacturing route |
| Wall thickness | Standard schedules and custom walls subject to forming and heat-treatment review |
| Construction | Seamless or welded as applicable and ordered |
| Heat treatment | Solution heat treated in accordance with the ordered material specification |
| End preparation | Butt-weld bevel to the matching pipe and welding specification |
| Documentation | EN 10204 3.1 MTC, PMI, heat-treatment record and additional testing as ordered |
Dimensions and tolerances follow the ordered standard and edition. Final pressure-temperature suitability is determined by the piping design code, material, wall thickness, matching pipe and service conditions.
ASME and European project requirements
North American projects
Specify ASTM A815 with the complete grade designation and UNS S32205, ASME B16.9, NPS, wall schedule, construction, supplementary tests and required solution heat-treatment records.
European projects
Specify EN 1.4462 where required, together with DN, wall thickness, dimensional standard, inspection certificate, regulatory requirements and any corrosion or ferrite testing.
Duplex 2205 vs 316L pipe end cap
| Selection point | S32205 Duplex 2205 | WP316L / S31603 |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Duplex ferritic-austenitic | Austenitic |
| Strength | Higher typical yield strength | Lower typical yield strength but broad fabrication familiarity |
| Chloride behavior | Improved SCC and localized corrosion resistance in many services | Good general resistance; limitations increase with severe chloride exposure |
| Fabrication control | Tighter heat-input and phase-balance control | Established austenitic stainless welding practice |
Typical applications
| Industry | Typical service | Selection reason |
|---|---|---|
| Offshore oil and gas | Produced water, utilities and process headers | Strength and chloride resistance |
| Desalination | Pretreatment, brackish water and selected seawater systems | Resistance to localized corrosion when correctly specified |
| Chemical processing | Chloride-bearing and corrosive process lines | Balanced strength and corrosion performance |
| Pulp and paper | Bleaching and chemical-recovery support systems | Useful resistance in selected chloride and chemical environments |
Application examples are guidance only. The project engineer must confirm material compatibility, corrosion allowance, impact requirements and design-code compliance.
Manufacturing, inspection and documentation
Duplex fittings require disciplined forming, welding where applicable and solution heat treatment. PMI, heat-treatment records, ferrite testing and corrosion testing can be incorporated into the inspection plan when the project specification requires them.
PMI and heat-number traceability confirm the ordered UNS designation.
Solution heat-treatment cycle and records reviewed against ASTM A815 requirements.
Ferrite, hardness, corrosion or NDE testing performed when specified.
Size, wall, length, ovality and bevel verified before export packing.

Frequently asked questions
Is S32205 the same as Duplex 2205?
UNS S32205 is a widely specified Duplex 2205 composition with defined chemistry controls. The full ordered material standard and grade designation remain authoritative.
Why choose Duplex 2205 instead of 316L?
Duplex 2205 offers higher strength and improved resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking and localized corrosion in many services, but it also needs tighter welding and heat-treatment control.
Is a ferrite test required?
It is not automatically required for every order in the same way. If the project has a ferrite acceptance range or test method, include it in the purchase specification.
Can S32205 caps be welded to duplex pipe?
Yes, when the pipe, filler metal, welding procedure, heat input and interpass temperature are properly specified and qualified by the fabricator.
What should be included in the RFQ?
Include ASTM A815 grade, UNS S32205, ASME B16.9, size, wall, construction, heat treatment, NDE, ferrite or corrosion tests and certification requirements.
