Description

Duplex stainless steel industrial valve

Duplex 2205 Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

A high-strength chloride-resistant valve material for offshore, chemical, pulp and water applications. The triple offset butterfly valve configuration is engineered for compact high-temperature or severe-service process isolation.

What is a Duplex 2205 Triple Offset Butterfly Valve?

A Duplex 2205 Triple Offset Butterfly Valve combines a ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel combining higher strength with improved chloride stress-corrosion and localized-corrosion resistance compared with common austenitic grades with a quarter-turn metal-seated design using three geometric offsets to reduce seat rubbing and support severe-service isolation.

Duplex performance depends on balanced microstructure, correct solution heat treatment, controlled welding and component-specific material specifications. Seat-stack design, pressure direction, leakage class, shaft loading, thermal cycling and actuator torque are configuration-specific.

Duplex 2205 material selection

Selection point Engineering guidance
Material profile a ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel combining higher strength with improved chloride stress-corrosion and localized-corrosion resistance compared with common austenitic grades
Why it is selected Higher strength than 300-series stainless steels with useful pitting, crevice and chloride stress-corrosion resistance.
Typical service Offshore production, produced water, pulp and paper, chemical processing and chloride-bearing water systems.
Limitations to check Temperature limits, hydrogen-related damage, improper heat treatment and intermetallic phases must be considered. 2205 is not interchangeable with super duplex 2507.
Specification route Wrought ASTM A182 F60/F51; cast ASTM A995/A890 4A where applicable; heat treatment and corrosion testing defined by order
Verification PMI, MTC, heat treatment records and specified ferrite, ASTM A923 or corrosion testing according to the project material specification.
Important: State S32205 or S31803 and the exact wrought/cast grade; the general word duplex is not sufficient. Body, bonnet/cover, trim, stem/shaft, seats, packing, bolting and gaskets must be specified as one compatible system.

Triple Offset Butterfly Valve design and standards

API 609

Common design basis for butterfly valves; category, body pattern, seat design and edition must be identified.

ASME B16.34

Pressure-temperature and general valve design requirements where applicable.

API 598 / EN 12266-1

Shell and seat testing selected for the applicable project and market.

API 607 / ISO 10497

Fire-safe qualification applies only to the exact seat, seal and valve configuration.

Seal ring, seat stack, pressure direction, shaft/packing system, bearing loads and actuator safety factor must be reviewed as a complete package.

Fire-safe, fugitive-emission, sour-service, oxygen, cryogenic, chlorine and PED requirements apply only when explicitly defined and supported for the exact offered configuration.

Typical applications

Industry Material service context Valve selection focus
Offshore oil and gas Produced water, utility and selected process systems Pressure direction, leakage class, metal-seat design, temperature, torque and fire-safe/emissions qualification
Pulp and paper Digesters, bleaching support and chloride-bearing process lines Pressure direction, leakage class, metal-seat design, temperature, torque and fire-safe/emissions qualification
Chemical processing Organic acids, chlorides and mixed process streams after review Pressure direction, leakage class, metal-seat design, temperature, torque and fire-safe/emissions qualification
Water and desalination Feed, pretreatment and moderate seawater-related systems Pressure direction, leakage class, metal-seat design, temperature, torque and fire-safe/emissions qualification

Application examples are not a corrosion or design approval. The end user must verify process chemistry, contaminants, pressure, temperature, velocity, cycling, emissions and regulatory requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between S31803 and S32205?

S32205 has tighter minimum alloying requirements that improve consistency of corrosion performance. Both are used for 2205 products, but the exact UNS grade must be stated.

Why is heat treatment important for duplex valves?

Correct solution heat treatment helps establish the required ferrite-austenite balance and dissolve harmful phases. Improper thermal history can reduce toughness and corrosion resistance.

Which tests are commonly requested for duplex material?

Projects may require PMI, ferrite measurement, ASTM A923 testing, corrosion testing, impact testing and NDE. Requirements depend on product form, service and project specification.

What are the three offsets?

They separate the shaft from the seat and body centerlines and add a conical sealing geometry, allowing rapid seat disengagement during opening.

Is every triple offset butterfly valve bidirectional?

No. Some designs have a preferred pressure direction or different leakage capability by direction. Confirm the tested performance of the exact configuration.

Can Duplex 2205 be used for every component in this triple offset butterfly valve?

Not automatically. Pressure-boundary, trim, stem or shaft, seating, packing, gasket and bolting materials have different mechanical and corrosion duties. The complete bill of materials must be engineered for the service.
